In an essay entitled The Magic of Metaphor: Children Writing Poetry, teacher Perie J. Longo tells the story of a Children's Poetry Reading that she had orchestrated at a community arts fair held on a local beach.

It matters that the leaves are turning green again, and that a bear is practicing magic in a cave. The changing of days matters as much as a cloud gets hit by lightning. Nothing mattered when I was in bed sick, but the waves from the ocean matter... The sound of juice hitting the bottom of a can matters, the time of day... the jump of a seal, the arc of a seal's back, the changing of seasons. Everything changes... and changes... and changes...

After the readings, one of the surfers came up to her shyly. "Those kids are really something," he said. "Tell that little girl who read about what matters and how everything changes--tell her she changed my life."
